Gingerbread House Decorating

Saturday December 2nd, from 2 pm. to 5 pm.

Children of all ages are invited to come and create a Gingerbread House. Graham crackers, candy decorations, and frosting will be provided to create these magnificent homes. Like last year, this event will be held inside the American Gothic House. This event is free and fun for all.

American Gothic Halloween

Come with your costumes and have a safe, fun, and educational Halloween here at the American Gothic House Center. There will be fun games, like Boo Bowling, Grab the Spider, and Slime Study. Plus there will be some neat craft activities like Fairies in a bottle, reveal the web, and create your own black cat. This event is Free and costumes are encouraged, we hope to see you here.

Music on the Porch

August 26th from 11 am to 5 pm

Play music on the Porch Day is an international day of music. Wheatfield will play from 3-5pm. MMLD (More Music Less Drama), Tom and Lily, will play from 1-3pm. The Chickadees, Allison and Stephanie will be playing from 11-1pm. Gothic Town Grillers food truck will be here for the day. 10 Year Anniversary

The American Gothic House Center has been open for 10 years!
Saturday August 12, from 1:00-3:00 pm

the grant cranepieIn celebration the Center will have a display of the building of the Center up inside the American Gothic House. There will be free pie and refreshments, Beth Howard will also be here with some of her famous pies. There will also be live music and a caricature artist here for your enjoyment.

The State Historical Society of Iowa will be hosting a workshop, Lilies of the Alley miniatures. Grant wood created found-object sculptures in the shape of potted flowers with whatever he found int he alley behind his home in Cedar Rapids. Participants will have the chance to create their own Lilies of the Alley miniatures in the American Gothic House. This will be a come and go program where people can participate any time between 1:00-3:00 pm, supplies may be limited, so arrive early to ensure you have a chance to create your own lily. This workshop is sponsored by the Iowa Arts Council.

The Center will be closed on Tuesday July 4th, so our lovely staff and volunteers can celebrate their freedom, and this great country. We would also like to thank the men and women of the armed forced that allow us to keep our freedom.

Exhibit inside the American Gothic House – City of Eldon Commemorates 70th anniversary of the Flood of ’47

This amazing exhibit, curated by Patti Durflinger, expresses the shock and devastation of the flood of ’47. Come and see what downtown Eldon looked like, hear testimonials from individuals that lived through the flood.

Printmaking at the American Gothic House

May 27, 2017 from 12-3 pm. 
Inspired by Grant Wood’s interest in printmaking and landscape, this 3-hour intensive workshop will introduce participants to the basics of etching, using readily available, DIY materials and processes.  Within the open-air setting outside the American Gothic House, we will create beautifully etched, copperplate images.  Materials and supplies, including an etching press, copper plates, paper, and inks will be supplied.

Celebrate the beautiful and unique house that inspired Grant Wood’s American Gothic. Enter your artwork in one of five divisions to win a cash prize for first and second place in your division. Registration begins at 6:45am. All ages are welcome (16 and  under must by accompanied by an adult). Route goes through Eldon, along the Des Moines River, through the park and will end where you begin at the American Gothic House Center.
